One of the coolest things about Minecraft Java is that they make it easy for you to still download and play these older versions of the game, and I think that any game that is chained to some creepy invasive online DRM thing should at-least have that as an option so people can keep enjoying their favorite version of a game even if it’s “obsolete”. Playing the game from update to update, this change was apparently subtle enough that I didn't notice (or I’ve just forgotten), but when you go from 1.12.2 to 1.6.4 the exact same world and terrain have a different feel to them because of this. An interesting thing I noticed recently when I was using an old world seed to get some mountain terrain for my Joust project - I noticed part of why older versions of Minecraft feel nostalgic is that the whole game is rendered differently, especially the way distance fog looks.
